Mentor Launch Event

October 6 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Free

We are excited to invite you to participate in the
Fall 2021 – Spring 2022 Mentorship Program! See below for  important dates and participation guidelines:

GROUP FORMAT:

  • Try to meet as a group approximately every 2 months.
    (In-person or virtually)
  • As there are more mentees than mentors usually, it will likely be a group meeting with 1 mentor and 2-3 mentees.
  • Be respectful of each other’s time.
  • Create a group chat in the Charleston Women in Tech Slack channel to communicate and share information with one another.
TO THE MENTEES:
Are you mentorable?
Are you open about the areas where you want help?

Respectful of your mentor’s time and advice?

  • Please be considerate of your mentor’s schedule and work around their availability.
  • Success is not just having a mentor tell you or show you what to do. It’s a two-way relationship. This program should help you feel comfortable asking for help or getting guidance.
  • The mentee is the person in control, and they must respond to the mentor’s advice but remember to communicate about their needs to grow.
  • To help both yourself and your mentor, try to draft 1-3 concise questions to your mentor in-between the in-person /virtual gatherings.  Share on Slack or email and cc your mentees so they can benefit from the responses.
TO THE MENTORS or NEW MENTORS CONSIDERING MENTORING:
Have you thought that your own experiences could help
another person?

Did you know you can learn from your Mentees?

Did you know mentoring can help you become a more confident and empathetic leader?

  • Try to help as best you can, but do not overreach beyond what is comfortable for you and your schedule.
  • Being a mentor is about asking smart questions, not having all the answers.
  • You will help your mentee more by listening closely and asking questions than by having the answer for everything
  • It’s important to specify your preferred way of connecting (email, phone, Slack, in person, etc.), as well as when and how often you’re available to meet with your mentee. This is a chance to set clear boundaries.
  • Do you have the right skills to help this person?
If you feel you are not able to help the mentee, for any reason, please let us know!  We are happy to substitute another suitable mentor
