Our Stories

Learn how Charleston Women in Tech has enriched the professional experience of our members.

“Shortly after accepting a position at BoomTown, I attended a CHSWIT event. After the panel had finished, someone recognized me from my nametag and excitedly introduced herself. She worked in tech at BoomTown too, and had heard that another woman had been hired. Soon I was surrounded by several more, and as they each introduced themselves, and told me they had ladies lunches together, and kind of had to stick together because there weren’t many, and asked me a million questions about myself…I realized that being a woman in tech didn’t seem like it would be as lonely as I thought.”

“I was able to hire an amazing Project Manager for our Innovation Center based on a chance meeting at CHSWIT. After giving a talk at a CHSWIT meetup, I met lots of interesting women who had questions about the tech innovation process. One of those folks turned out to be an ideal candidate for a new job opening we hadn’t even posted yet. She has been a fabulous member of our team ever since.”

“The CHSWIT community events and meetups empowered me to have the opportunity to connect with like-minded women technologists from all areas in expertise and leadership levels in the Charleston area. Each CHSWIT event expresses the power of representation for women and minorities, which offers us the courage to candidly communicate our adversities, and provide a collaboration of knowledge-sharing amid STEM practitioners in all areas of the field. With each CHSWIT meetup, I’m reminded that I am not alone or unique to my concerns in promoting women and minorities through the ranks of technology. Since my membership with the CHSWIT community, I had the opportunity to share my defining moments as a woman in technology as a Computer Scientist via an Ignite Talk at their 5th Anniversary Mingle at Blackbaud HQ in December 2019. Further, as the 2020 Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) STEM awardee for Community Service in Government, I’m able to leverage my experiences from the CHSWIT to impactfully encourage women and minorities in tech at the national level.”

“CHSWIT became my place to meet new people in Charleston, connections, other designers, friends, even forever friends. It was great seeing what else was going on in the area. Just showing up was my goal and I loved Carolyn’s (the original founder of CHSWIT) idea of just try and meet 1 new person, that was a great attainable goal –– then it kept becoming many more than one. The meetups became more and more useful, fun and inspiring. It felt good to engage with all different ages and be able to help people succeed in whatever challenges they were experiencing. The CHSWIT Mentee/Mentor program really kicked me in gear and I was able to find something that I truly enjoyed and seemed to be good at, I have participated every year and love it.”

“CHSWIT provided me with opportunities to make real connections, to realize that I was not alone in my experiences, and to understand that I had valuable career insights worth sharing. I have been inspired and enlightened through break out sessions and panel discussions. But most importantly for me, CHSWIT has given me opportunities to give back. Some of the proudest moments of my career come from successes of those I’ve mentored through CHSWIT. ”

“"My involvement with the CHSWIT has helped me to identify, dissect and chisel away at my own hidden stereotypes of what it means to be a woman in tech.

Switching careers in my mid-30s and entering a field where women are a staggering minority (around 15%), I felt out of place and apprehensive when I first started. After I began attending CHSWIT events, I quickly realized that my unique perspectives within the industry were my strengths as a software engineer, not my weaknesses.

In addition to this newfound energy for my field, I've genuinely enjoyed meeting many intelligent, fun, and interesting woman at the events. Having a good group of female software engineers as my close peers to lean on and talk with about work challenges, has helped me become more confident in my career. Thank you CHSWIT for making this experience so meaningful! "”
